Wang Dongling Demonstrates His Dynamic Calligraphy Style at Asia Society New York

I was born and raised in a small village. As I was growing up, China went through the Cultural Revolution and later implemented the reform and opening policy in 1979. After 1979, China opened its doors, we were able to see many new things introduced to the country. Therefore I had the opportunity to study calligraphy as a master student at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. In fact, I have been obsessed with Chinese calligraphy and painting since my childhood. After graduating as a master student in calligraphy, I taught calligraphy lessons. I barely had a day without practicing calligraphy over the years. So I am immersed in Chinese calligraphy
and traditional culture due to such training. I think calligraphy is a classic representation of Chinese culture. Yet it is also considered an art form. So I believe, as an art form, it can bridge Chinese culture to the Western culture and connect the past to the present. I was classically trained. However, I think that in today’s world, art needs to be innovative. In the same way, I hope more people can appreciate Chinese calligraphy. Which is why I created this contemporary style called “luanshu”. Traditionally, characters in Chinese calligraphy are forbidden to cross one another. But in “luanshu”, I’ve let characters cross each other and lines overlap. Just like what my granddaughter told me,
“Characters are fighting with each other.” But of course, when I write, I still retain the integrity of the classical technique. But when you look at the overlapping characters, they look like calligraphy, yet they also look like an abstract painting. So you can even better appreciate these strokes and the change in the negative space. The reason I do calligraphy is to give people a positive feeling about this form of expression. Because there is a special aspect of Chinese calligraphy where we allow the strokes in the characters to have spirit. It can express an invidividual’s inner thoughts and emotions.

  1. Amazing work by a great calligraphy master, and the cursive nature of the calligraphy is rather unusual, expressive, and beautiful.
