The Tortoise and The Hare – Making Better Choices (A puppetry show)

NARRATOR: Hello everyone! As you may already know, Tortoise and Hare had a race. And in this race, Tortoise won. Let’s see what Hare has up in its sleeve today. HARE: How could I have lost to Tortoise yesterday, well, just by a tiny weeny whisker of mine. So today, I have challenged him to another race! I bet I’ll win this one. Let’s see where Tortoise is now. Tortoise… Has anyone seen Tortoise? Tortoise, where are you? Ah, Tortoise! There you are. So, are you ready for another race today? TORTOISE: Uhh, hello everyone. It is nice to see all of you here. HARE: Tortoise, Tortoise! TORTOISE: Oh gosh, you scared me, Hare. HARE: Did you forget about our race today? TORTOISE: Uhh, the race? Ahh yes, I remember now. I sure am ready for it. I may be slow, but I’ll give it a go. HARE: I am the fastest in this garden. I can run through the tickliest grass, rush around the large Eco Lake, and nip over the muddy Palm Valley. And you shall not beat me today! Watch me. Ouch! TORTOISE: What happened, Hare? HARE: Aww I think I stepped onto something. It’s an empty drink can. TORTOISE: Why is an empty drink can here in this beautiful garden? HARE: I’m not sure, but what I know is, there is a lot of litter lying about on the ground. Look. TORTOISE: Yuck. I think… I think we should clean this place up. HARE: Yes, only when this place is free of litter then it is safe for us to have a race. TORTOISE: Sometimes, people are not careful and they dump their litter anywhere. TORTOISE: Litter doesn’t belong here.
HARE: It belongs in the rubbish bin! TORTOISE: Uhh
HARE: Say no more, my friend. Let me, the strongest and fastest hare you’ve ever met, bring one here now! NARRATOR: Hare starts to search for a rubbish bin, high and low, left and right. HARE: Here it is. A rubbish bin. TORTOISE: Gosh, there are too many items in the rubbish bin. There won’t be enough space for all this litter that we have here. [The rubbish bin starts to shake.] HARE: What was that? Tortoise, did you hear a noise? TORTOISE: What, what, what? No, I didn’t. [The rubbish bin shakes again.] LIGHT: Hello, anyone there? Anyone there? TORTOISE: Uhh, now I hear it. The voice is coming out from the rubbish bin. HARE: I shall see who this is. HARE: Oh, who are you? LIGHT: I am Light the light bulb. Please get me out of this bin! HARE: Let me help you out. TORTOISE: What were you doing in the rubbish bin? You look perfectly fine to me, why would anyone dump you here? LIGHT: See this little scratch here? My owner didn’t want to use me anymore just because of a small scratch. Other than that, I am working fine! HARE: [gasp] That is very wasteful. You poor thing. LIGHT: Anyway, look at all these items in the rubbish bin. Not all of them belong here, some can have a second life! HARE: A second life? TORTOISE: Uhh, a second life? What do you mean by that, Light? LIGHT: It means to use something again instead of throwing it away. It is also called reuse. TORTOISE: Reuse… reuse. What are the things we can reuse then? LIGHT: Take for example this piece of newspaper. After you are done reading it, it can be re-used as a wrapping paper! TORTOISE: Ah, what a great idea. I have not thought of it before. HARE: And we can reuse this plastic bottle as a vase for beautiful fresh flowers! See, just like this. LIGHT: Yes, Hare. And you can also use this plastic bottle to plant some seeds in it to grow your favourite carrots! TORTOISE: And… and lovely lettuce too!
LIGHT: Yeah! TORTOISE: Light, is there still another way we can give these items a second life? LIGHT: Of course, there is. HARE & TORTOISE: Tell us, please. LIGHT: Other than re-use, we can also recycle. TORTOISE: Uhh, recycle? But we don’t have any bicycle here. How do we recycle? HARE: Silly Tortoise. This is not what recycle means. It means… It means… So Light, what does recycle mean? LIGHT: Recycle means to make something new out of something that has already been used. HARE: So what can we do to help? LIGHT: That’s a very good question, Hare. I think our friend, Binny the rubbish bin, can help us on this! BINNY: I heard my name, Light. LIGHT: You are finally awake, Binny. HARE & TORTOISE: Hello Binny! BINNY: Hello my friends! Yes, recycling is the way. Not all items belong to me, some of them can be placed into my brothers, the recycling bins! HARE & TORTOISE: The recycling bins? BINNY: Yeah, the recycling bins. Each bin is used to store items that are made from the same material, like plastic, glass, paper and metal. HARE: How does a recycling bin look like? BINNY: This is how a recycling bin looks like. See this sign over here, it is a recycling symbol. When we see this sign, we are reminded to make better choices, to recycle our items. HARE: Now that we have the recycling bins, let’s get started! TORTOISE: Uhh… Yes! HARE & TORTOISE: Bye bye, Binny and Light. HARE: Look! Look what I have here! TORTOISE: It’s a cardboard box! It is made of paper, so… so… HARE: It belongs in the paper recycling bin! TORTOISE: Look! Look what I have here! HARE: It’s a drink can! It is made of metal, so, TORTOISE: Uhh, it belongs in the metal recycling bin! HARE: Look! Look what I have here! TORTOISE: It’s a plastic bottle! It is made of plastic, so… so… HARE: It belongs in the plastic recycling bin! I think we are done! TORTOISE: Not yet, Hare… There are still litter around that we need to pick up and recycle.
