Welcome to another one of my videos.
In this one we are going to be looking at sock puppets.
a little bit better than the average rather than the simple ones,
make them a little bit more decent. let’s get started.
Now with these ones we are going to do people type puppets, vertically.
We are going to take advantage of a sock that has got its heel worn out
and that is going to be where we are going to put the arms and then the mouth
in the top part of the sock. We are going to take a couple pieces
of cloth around about 10cm by about 70mm I suppose, about the size of arms
and you are going to be able to fold it over, to make the arm and also
some sort of hand out of stiff material for the hands, with one on each side. You can do this by hand or by machine.
Put your hand on there, fold your material over, and then down across the hand and down
the side without sewing the hand fingers. turn them in the other way and you should
get your arm like that. Now, on your sock,
with your holy heel here you are going to cut to half way
right angles to the foot right angles to the top.
so that when you cut it it is going to more or less make a tube.
With the sock turned inside out put the hand into there, and into
the slot or the corner here, and pin it, and put the other one
on the other side on that corner and pin it. Pin that seam if you need to, if you
don’t feel confident about holding it shut Then sew from one arm along that seam
and across to the other arm. So that when you turn it in the other way
the arms should be in the right place. So, for the mouth we are going to turn
the body sideways like this and then cut a circle of material the diameter
of the width of the sock. Then we are going to cut a circle out of
cardboard, and bend it over or in this case it is MDF cut in half with
a cloth hinge glued on. So that when we put those two together,
that’s going to form our mouth and it’s going to go here.
Then I am going to decide how far up my mouth is going to be whether
it’s going to have a big forehead or a small one or in the middle
somewhere around here and I am going to cut to exactly to
half way. Turn it inside out, fold the mouth in half
and in quarters, to find the 4 quadrants. and put in a pin here to mark it in the
corners, one in the back and one here So that you open it up, and you have your
4 corners marked with the pins. On the mouth you are going to find
the four quadrants too. There is one and two, and then
the point here at the tip of the chin and stick a pin in to mark it,
and also the top at that corner also. One, two, three, four.
Then line up the pins and re-pin that mouth piece into all four
and ones in between. And whether you do it by hand or
by machine is not important but you are going to put the mouth down
and sew right around the circle. Now, the width of that seam there
is going to dictate how thick or deep your lip of the mouth
is going to be. So there we have it and with some
white glue on this side, you are going to stick that onto there. Now, notice that the cloth mouth piece
is exactly the same size as the mouth board, so when it is dry
and you turn it in the other way you get a nice lip.
Now, you could fill the head with some fluffy fiber, or some material,
or something, but I prefer to do it with foam.
Now, the dimensions of that to get a two sided crown plus a plug
in the middle. The dimensions of that would be about one and a halftimes
the width of the mouth and more or less as tall as the sock is
so that you get your two pieces like that Glue around the edge and a plug. Also you may want to put a little bit
of a chin around that side and with some contact glue,
on they go. So it’s a little bit like this,
and then turn it in the other way. You can also put an extra thin piece
around the back here just so that it comes around nicely.
So what’s left is to put some features on Some hair, eyes, nose,
and there you have it.
