Sandcastle Construction

[music] Let’s read together! Show me! The big ship! Look at this one. Dan: Alright, troops, are you ready for some fun today? Yeah! Dan: I understand that you have some books about structures, construction, architecture. Is this true? Yeah! Dan: Alright, well it just so happens we’re
going to have fun at the beach today. And here’s what I want you to do. As you have been looking through your books
I think some of you might have seen some buildings and some construction from the old days that were made out of pyramids, right? Yeah! Dan: And maybe some of you saw some buildings
that use the power of domes, right? Yeah! Dan: And some of you even used big tall skyscrapers
and small square houses, right? Yeah! Dan: Do you think we can make some sand castles
that look like those? Yeah! Dan: I think so too. Are you ready? Yeah! Dan: Let’s go do it! Dan: Okay, ladies, now you said you used domes to make your sand castle creation, right? Yeah. Dan: What exactly is a dome? Well, it’s part of a sphere. Dan: Oh, so kind of like a part of a beach
ball? Yeah. Dan: Ah, wait a second, you guys used beach balls to make your sand castles? No! Dan: Alright, you two, your job was to build a sand castle creation using pyramids. Show me and tell me, what did you do? Made a cone and then flattened out the sides, then made a tip on the top. Dan: Ooh, started with a cone, straightened out the sides, and a little tip on the top. Kind of like a cherry on top of ice cream? Yeah. Dan: That’s not ice cream though, is it? No. Dan: You don’t want me to eat it, right? No. Dan: Good, because I wasn’t going to eat it, alright. Dan: So one of the groups made their sand castles out of domes, one of the groups made it out of pyramids. Ladies, tell me, what did you make yours out
of? Rectangles. Dan: Rectangles and there’s some squares on
the ends too, isn’t there? Yes. Dan: It almost looks like a box. Yeah. Dan: But people can live in there. Yes. Dan: I can live in there? Well, not really because you need a bigger
one. Dan: What do you mean you need a bigger one? Are you saying I’m big? You can’t fit inside there. Dan: I can try. Dan: Ladies, help me understand this, did it take about half an hour or so for you to make this today, right? Yeah. Dan: Okay, how long do you think in real life
if we brought in some real construction workers, how long do you think it would take them in
real life to build something? Like a whole year. Dan: A whole year. I think that might be a good guess. Construction is awesome!
