Ruthie’s Toy Box (Paper Crane) 005

Hi, I’m Ruthie, and welcome to Ruthie’s Toy Box. In today’s video, we’re going to learn how to make a Paper Crane. It doesn’t require any adult supervision. All you need is a piece of paper, a flat surface, and a little bit of time. Let’s get started. In making the paper crane, you’ll need some paper that is an exact square. As you can see right here, these are all perfect squares. I actually, bought paper that’s specifically made for origami. So you can get that at any craft store. Or you can make your own square. Just make sure that it’s the same distance on every side. OK, let’s get these guys out of the way and start our project. So, the paper is two-sided. I want the color side to be on the outside. So I am going to flip it like that. And now I’m going to start folding it. As you can see here, we need to make sure that we have an exact fold. Fold … and crease. Fold … and crease. To make the creases really nice and firm, you can use your fingernail just like that. Now we will do the exact same crease on the opposite side. So, corner to corner. As perfect as possible … and …. crease … crease. … fingernail to give it … a lot more perfection in that. And now you can see we’ve divided it. So, in this step, what we’re going to do is we are going to do a magic squash-fold. So I’ve folded it. Now I’m literally going to open it. Just so you can see what I’m doing. I’m going to open it like that and squash it down … and make sure that it lines up nice and even. Use your nails. Get the nice precise square. Perfect square. flip it over; same exact movement on this one. Open it … just like that … and then make sure that … and then … Make sure that the whole thing opens or it will mess this up. You want to make sure to be as precise as possible. Because this is the base for your crane. Now at this point, we have a perfect square. Just like that. So I’m going to take this corner of just one of the flats and fold it to the center where that crease is … … on that line … and get that as exact as possible. Firm. OK, same on this one. Fold to the center … and flatten the crease. Flip it over. Do the exact same thing on this side. We want to make sure that you are precise as possible because it ends up taking away from the final product if it is not as precise as possible. Alright … So, it looks like a kite. On this next part we’re going to give you a gentle fold. Do not squeeze it down hard. Just enough that you’ve added a crease. So , I’m going to turn this to you so you can see it. You’re going to pull open this one flap just like that … and we are going to flip the creases … or what’s called inverting. So, I’m going to take that crease … I’m going to do the same crease to that. Invert both of them; nice and flat, … and do the exact same thing on the other side. So, … remember squash it just a little. Open it up like it’s a flower … and flip the creases. You can use your finger to run across it like that … and then … close them. Just like that. Well, this bird is not as pretty as I would like it to be because I’m flipping it around the opposite way to show you how to make it. So, now that we have this … you can see that we have the back and the wings. So, to show you how we’re going to do this, We need … to make … a really nice fold … to make the bird’s head. OK? So I’m going to hold this … just like that. And, I’m going to run my finger through this and pulling … and give it a nice fold. Just like that. And then, invert again just like that. So, … let’s do the same for the other side. Hold it. Open it up like a little bit of a flower. Close it. So, you can see the crease is under here. I want the head to look different than the tail. Let’s get these wings where they need to go. Just like that. So, I’m gonna run my finger a little bit here and open it up … and make a nice little head … and give it a nice little squeeze like that … and you have a Paper Crane. So that simple square piece of paper … and your hard work and your creases have created a beautiful Paper Crane that you can keep for yourself; give as a gift. You can even put it on a present as a bow. So just be creative with the uses of them … and have fun. This is a really great project to help you with your and fine motor skills.
