Professional Crafts: Clay

Professional Crafts: Clay

Rockingham Community College is pleased to
announce the new Professional Crafts: Clay program that will begin in January, 2016.
We are very excited to offer people the opportunity to make a life from a passion. Creating art
from clay is fundamentally satisfying. It reaches the child within us and allows us
to explore ourselves and enjoy our passion while contributing to family income.
The Professional Crafts: Clay curriculum is designed to prepare individuals
for employment as professional potters or in pottery related fields. Using
traditional and contemporary concepts, instruction includes technical
knowledge, design skills, and studio operations and safety. Course
work includes development of basic and advanced throwing skills with
emphasis on form and design. Glaze testing, Raku, and creating a portfolio,
are among the many subjects students will have the opportunity to study to
earn a Certificate in Professional Crafts: Clay.
Our instructors have varied and impressive backgrounds. Ben Winslow has a BFA from Valdosta
State Unitversity in Georgia plus study with many well known professional potters including
an intensive workshop with Catherine White on wood firing at Penland School of Crafts.

and at the Expressions show in Martinsville, Virginia.

addition to his studio work, Phil has served for four years as the Co-Director of Strictly
Functional Pottery National and one year as Co-Director of the Fuller Projects, an experimental
exhibition and installation space at Indiana University.
