Today is the Origami Festival. This is an
annual event and one of our most popular. We’ll expect to see about a thousand people
here today over the course of six hours. We have about fifty presenters here. Some are
professionals. Many are just experts in origami and they love the art and they come to share
it with the community. The Origami Festival is one of a group of events that we
do that attracts the community and they come to the garden or to the campus for the first time.
Just to come to this. But of course once they discover the garden and the campus they become
regulars. And then we find that people come back year after year. They come with their
children, their grandchildren. It’s a great kind of event that everybody can have a great time. It allows us to do what is our mission which is to reach out both to the campus and the community for educational and cultural purposes. An event like this
could not take place without many, many volunteers. So many of the volunteers you see here today are
students, active students, or returning students who come back to help us. And it really is this
place where people can come back and give back to the community and share their passion
for the Japanese culture.
