Origami Carnations for Mom

In this video you’ll see how to make a dozen paper carnations. To begin you’ll want to create the petals of the carnation which look something like this. And there made out of a folded piece of four inch piece of paper that ends up looking like this So take your four inch paper fold it in half horizontally then fold that in half horizontally to create a square which gives you a closed end and an open end. From the closed end take the tip and fold it over to create a triangle. and flip it over and do the same for the other side. Then open the triangle to create a large triangle and fold the sides into the center line and then fold it back together and that’s it for the folds and it ends up looking something like this ao next you want to take a pair of crimping scissor that look something like this, with the jagged edges and cut the top of the folded paper off to create an edge that looks like this then take regular straight edge scissors and cut just a fraction off each side of the folded paper something like this then flip it over and do the same on the other side and finally cut down the center of the folded paper about a half an inch Then unfold everything and you end up with a carnation petal that looks like this so for a dozen carnations, you’ll want to create sixty of those Here’s what it’ll look like so next you want to create the stem for your carnation. so take a eighteen inch piece of wire and attach something that looks like a carpel this is just something I pulled out of the scrap bin at my local florist and take a piece of floral tape a stretchy, slightly sticky tape, and affix the carpel to the wire base and it ends up looking something like that. so next you want to take five of your petals and poke a hole through the center of each so next take your five petals and slip it over the end of the wire for the stem and then take each petal and slide it up over the floral tape. until it meets the carpel, something like this Then squash the petal together to form it. then do the same for the others and you end up with your carnation flower looking something like this Next you want to create the base of the flower so take a eight or ten inch piece of craft paper about an inch wide, or three quarters of an inch wide and roll it into a tube, something like this and take a little glue, and glue the end of the paper like this make sure you leave enough room so that the tube will slip over the stem and slip the tube on to the end of the wire. and press it gently up over the floral tape and then twist it carefully so that the bottom of the tube stretches out to form a tapered base something like that, and then take a little glue and glue the base onto the flower. Next you’ll want to create the stem itself so take another piece of craft paper, dark green, about eighteen inches long and about an inch wide and wrap it diagonally around the wire twisting it around the wire base stretching and tightening as you go along then take a little glue and glue the end of the stem together. flip it around and put a little dab of glue at the top end of the stem and push that up onto the base of the flower and then finally at the other end, a little dab of glue to affix the end of the stem to the wire and you end up with something looking like this. Next you’re going to create the leaves. this is what a leaf looks like again made out of dark green craft paper. In this case its about an inch wide and three inches long fold it in half lengthwise to create a center line To use as the base for the folds you’re going to use to create the leaf Then take one side of the paper, and fold the tip over to the far side using the center line like that, so that its about three quarters of an inch from the edge of the fold to the top of the paper and do the same for the other side and then take the overlap and fold it around the tip. this will be the stem of the flower at the other end of the paper, about half the length of the stem fold the tip over again using the center line so that the tip almost meets the far side of the paper so take the other tip and fold it over to create a new tip and then fold that over to create the tip of the leaf. and you end up with something looking like this and you probably want to take a little bit of glue to glue the back side of the leaf together so finally you want to create the stem of the leaf about a third of the way up on the narrow end fold the tip over so it comes about half way between to fold and the tip of the leaf and there you go your carnation leaf So now you’re going to take the leaf and add it to the stem of your carnation so untwist the stem just a little bit to create a gap between the layers and then slide the tip of the leaf into that gap and push it in so that it fits nice and snuggly and it comes out looking like this. no glue needed to hold these in place and the same for the second, untwist the stem slightly to create a gap then slide the leaf into the gap. so there you go, a finished carnation create a dozen of these. In my case I created four different colours and then bundle them together into a bundle that looks sometihng like this. Mom’s gonna love these!
