  1. I'm not an expert but the extra width help plane takes off at lower speed, but not needed at cruising speed as they add drag. So it fold them up and work as a stabilizer. Is that it?

  6. Oh good nasa is working on solving one of the most difficult challenges in modern aviation; how to build a glorified toy that can fold its wings. AMAZING!!! And all this time I thought energy efficient NEW forms of propulsion was the goal, now with this break through we can fold the tips of an airplanes wing, I guess this means pilots can keep dumping jet fuel into the atmosphere for us to breath in while we marvel at the beauty of folded wings on a plane and blaming each other for climate change. Way to go NASA, it’s nice to now the tact money stollen from us to fund this kind of shit instead of maintaining our deteriorating infrastructure, instead of giving more private companies the chance to do what you fuckers haven’t done in half a century in months like Space X.   12. They could have saved a lot of money by asking the AMA hobbyists to build and fly it. Also if the wings fold down, they still offer drag. And the safety hazard from a failure would be unacceptable.

Compression lift, interesting, Just recall guys, Concorde was doing this years back, no hinges, designed by men in sheds with pencils and slide rules, they choose to go with good design practice rather than have the public balk at getting on an airliner with wings that folded this and that way,……or folded when they were not supposed to also tried a lot of this crud on gliders, ……good reason why they don't do it today.

This stuff is basic on the idea to obtain maximum lift to drag ratio by extending the wing at low speed and folding wingtips to serve as wing-lets to reduce the induced drag under high speed conditions. But the problem is these big sizes folding wingtips will make bad influences on the directional stability. Considered extreme failure conditions, for example, one engine failure plus one-side folding mechanical failure, the aircraft would hardly have enough directional control to correct the yaw moment caused by the asymmetric wingtips plus the asymmetric thrust.

  27. Swell! And how do you handle the aircraft, much less land it, when one of the outer spans fails to retract to its take-off and land position? No thank you! ALL aircraft systems have redundancies, fail-safes, and fail-overs. Landing gear sometimes fails to extend and that's a dangerous enough condition. Putting a large "yaw-aircraft-sideways-upon-touchdown" device isn't safe.

    For passenger airliners, I think I'll stick with the current split-tip winglets used on some of our latest and most efficient designs.

    But if it works for drones, hey, more power to you.

  28. All they had to do was look up the data from North American Aircraft. They did this on the XB-70 55 YEARS AGO. Nothing like re-inventing the wheel at the taxpayers expense. How about NASA gets down to some ORIGINAL, USEFULL research.
