  1. Proving once again that John & Only in Japan is the best "ワンマン” show on YouTube! NHK's "Japan Railway Journal" better watch out! But seriously, it is fun to see videos on rail passes other than the JR Pass. Japan has MANY of these regional tickets. One could dedicate a series to exploring these regional passes. Additionally, tourists can get these passes at a great discount without the need to pre-purchase. (The JR pass must be purchased before leaving to Japan and it's quite expensive.) These regional passes often come in 1, 2 and 3 day unlimited travel varieties and can can be purchased at the station after showing your passport.

  2. Looks fantastic. I spend quite a bit of time in Kyoto and heard of the Eizan Line, but never got the chance to ride.

  3. Beautiful train. It looks very clean. Even the stations are clean as possible.
Japan looks as if it has no dirt or dust. Nice for travel !

  4. Kyoto looks so pretty and just cozy and lovely.. if i could speak japanese i'd live there.. it's just so dreamy.

  5. Hey John, why dont you go to the oigawa railway, it be impressive to see some of japans old steam locomotives in action

  6. Hi John. Love your videos. Just curious if you'll maybe do a video on the steam trains in Japan sometime in the future? I've seen quite a lot of videos on YouTube and they look like something right up your ally.. 😉 Adventurous and fun. I don't know the exact location or the whereabouts in Japan but I think they have something to do with a large railroad museum. Just a thought.. Thanks again for the very entertaining videos.. 🙂

  7. is wearing a air mask some sort of culture in japan? its so clean there but i see always when it comes to japan they were masks. especially women

  8. I've ridden the Eizan line numerous times. Amazing scenery and a great train trip. Coming from Osaka the Keihan line train will take you direct to Demachiyanagi where you go upstairs and catch the Eizan line. As indicated in the video, the line splits half way along with alternate trains to Kurama and Yase-Hieizanguchi. Both are well worth visiting. At Kurama you can catch the cable car then an easy walk to numerous temples – this area is amazingly peaceful and you wouldn't think that you are still in busy Japan.

Catch the train back as far as Takaragaike (where the 2 parts of the line branch off) and swap to the other platform to go to Yase-Hieizanguchi where you can catch the cable car then the ropeway for fantastic views of the Kyoto area. There is even a garden museum after you exit the ropeway if that's your thing. When done you can get the ropeway & cable car back down to the train.

  9. The conductor's Kyoto intonation, subtle but it's still there. I like how the language sounds different every few prefectures.

  10. Hey ONLY in JAPAN you should do a video of the place that has the worlds largest GUNDAM that would be great

  11. Any person from North America who is fortunate to have leisure or vacation time in Japan should just strike out on their own and use the express trains to get to and from points at far distances and then take the local trains to places few foreign travelers get to see. Unlike the U.S. it is possible to get to mostly all parts of the prefectures by train or linking bus. Because of the U.S. railroads dropping passenger service and handing that job to AMTRAK, there are even two states – South Dakota and Wyoming – that have no AMTRAK service. It is such a joy to travel by train in Japan without having to drive. If you do rent a car for side-trips, use a right hand drive car because it is easier to remember that you drive on the left just like in England, Australia, and Newfoundland.

  12. I was on the 9th floor of capsule hotel in Kyoto when storm 21 hit. We don't get Typhoon's in Canada so hopefully it will be the one and only typhoon I have to experience.

  13. @7:25 I swear I saw this market on the anime series/movie Tamako-love story. They also got their famous daifuku. Boob-mochi where are you

  14. This was well shot, edited and presented. It was so beautiful and insightful. I wish I can go there one day. Thank you for showing us all of this.

  15. I really like how you blend in and not seem like a tourist or just focus on yourself or how different the Japanese culture is. Keep up the great work!

  16. splendid!

I feel your affection to Japan through your you tube.

I am glad that Japan's fascination is introduced to the world by your magical explanation.

Thank you for your devoting guide.

  17. Fantastic video! I was in Kyoto in January and rode this line, but not as far out as you did. It's a beautiful line for sure and I truly enjoyed my time on it. I'd like to go back in fall and ride it out till the end.
Thank you for your hard work in producing this!! 🙂

  18. 7:05 is that shopping arcade the inspiration for the location in the Kyoto Animation anime series "Tamoko Market"?? Looks nearly IDENTICAL… Even the Mochi shop… Anime studios are well know for using/repurposing local locations/architecture in their shows under fictional names.

  19. Great video and with interviews too! Good to see footage of tracks lesser traveled. I used to ride this line twice a week when I was on contract at Seika Daigaku. Went all the way up to Kurama a couple of times. There's this place up there with open tatami dining areas suspended above the river and you can eat with the sound of running water under you and a 360 panorama of forest around you. Couldn't afford it at the time but had a good bowl of nishin soba near by.

  20. What I like from Japan are:
-) the people are not dirty, they maintain the cleanliness of the environment👍👍👍
-) never disturb the personal life of others.
-) never interfere with sleeping people
-) items that are dropped or left behind are not lost.
-) responsible even though it does not intentionally damage other people's goods, even if the owner does not know
-) respect all religions, because Muslims always get verbal and physical violence in other countries.
-) parents feel safe for their children to grow without being overshadowed by the kidnapping of minors.
-) the government is concerned about the lives of investors and foreign workers.
-) hospital fees are very cheap.
-) tuition fees at the best universities are also cheaper than my own country.

I think Japan are worth for next investment and live in😀😀😀👍👍

  21. It's amazing that no matter where you go, it's so clean and neat in Japan and there is no garbage or gum or spits on the ground. Being there is truly like being in a different world.

  22. I really like how the conducter is smartly dressed, ride any city/suburban train in the U.S. and they are sloppy and dressed like they dont give an S'. From New York to Atlanta and LA they all are really dirty trains and the employees do not give an F.

  23. Very nice work. You do an excellent job of drawing the viewer in. I felt totally absorbed in your videos like I could really be there.

  24. Thank you so much John ! Back in Japan in November & focuses on Kansai, this gem tour is now added on my trip 😍

  25. In Germany those one man trains are seen more often due to personal lack, but there’s no system to control any tickets.

  26. Japanese have a way of performing the most routine mundane tasks extremely efficiently without looking or sounding the least bit bored

  27. I'm a Indian🇮🇳 and a teen so I can't afford to go internationally and even my family go abroad they only go to europe countries,
But I love Japan🇯🇵,And one day I will go there
    Love Japan from INDIA🇮🇳🇯🇵🇯🇵🇮🇳

  28. I rode the HIEI line last time I went in Kyoto but I will try to ride the other line if I'm going back in Kyoto in the next years ^^
The commercial district is famous about some Anime fans, since is where "Tamako Market" takes place.

  29. omg this is so funny to watch because just last month, (May 2019), my hubby and I did the trip from Kyoto to Kurama and on the way back, we rode the Kirara Train which we nicknamed the "Aunty Jane Train" but only because for us (we're olde) it's slang for Marijuana. We know it's not on purpose but we giggled out heads off because the one we rode had the leaf motif everywhere throughout the train inside and out and it just looked like an advert for pot. Best, memories, EVA!

  30. How long would it take to go from demachiyanagi all the way till kurama? does the one day ticket offer unlimited rides on the eizan railway?

  31. I guess it works the same way as a bus. Looks like fare chart up there which you have to collect the departure ticket and pay that amount.

  32. You need to do less of the GO channel videos and more of these, you stopped doing these videos which is what hooked most of us to your channel.

  33. I rode the same type of train between Himeiji-Takeda, ou should try it. And you should do a segment of Takeda, That would be lovely.

  34. Hello Mr. John Daub; You remind me so much of late Freddie Mercury. That I just have to watch this show and spread it around. Peace. Just finished with your train ride from Toyoko to IZu?? it was a great train ride. I would need the most privacy for train overnite sleeping. But very great that they have unlimited options. I wonder if a little dog can get on overnight trains also. Japan has two ? Going to enjoy Kyoto train scenic ride .

  35. If I want to see a “ONLY in JAPAN” video with Nice japanese Nature in it. Which one do I watch? Thanks in advance

  36. 5:55 The wood paneling and benches of the older trains remind me of the subway in Pyongyang with their Soviet era trains.

  37. I found the passes that include eizan line a bit confusing before. I need one that include Kurama temple but with so many sightseeing pass I nearly making a mistake which pass I should buy..now it makes sense after I watch the video. Thanks for breaking down each of the lines thoroughly. I can't even thank you enough!

  38. there is also one-man train between toyama and takayama run by JR…scenic too and the railway runs through the mountainous Gifu prefecture

  39. You pay when you leave the Train that got you there . Thats a HONESTY SYSTEM by the People . Try that with Amtrak 😅😅😅😅😅
