My name is Jane, Jane Mowat and primarily I would say that I’m perhaps printmaker been working with natural woods and that led me also to work with the wood itself and start carving it. I started a series of
kind of mounting flanks I guess I could call them carving the surface…well let
the weather carves the surface of a mountain really. A few years ago I built a
four-poster bed and I wanted it to be more of an installation piece. I finally
decided I would like to make some hangings which would go with the bed.
I was drawn particularly to something called ‘blackwork’ which originally
perhaps comes from Spain, but it was very much adopted by the Tudors in England.
The inspiration for the images of this Tudor work in the 15th and 16th century was…guess what, wood cuts. So that brought me right back to working with woods, and
the stitches which would be inspired by woodcut. I thought that was very
serendipitous, besides very excited really to use very simple stitching and
to create my images.
