How to Make a Strawberry | Origami

This is a video for an origami strawberry. The first step is we’re going to start with
a diagonal fold. The diagonal fold is going to happen with
the white on the outside. Make sure that you get the corners exactly
on top of each other. You want to be as precise as you can, so not
off to the side, but just right on top of it. Slide your finger down, lock it in place and
then go out to the corners and that should give you a really nice diagonal fold. We’re going to do both sets of diagonal folds,
so open it back up and then do the other corner, to the other corner just like that, so it
will give you a nice X in the middle. Next flip the paper over. We’re going to do a book fold, so a book fold
is going to take the bottom edge up to the top edge. So when you do this try to again, make sure
that everything is precisely lined up. Get it right on top and then squish it down,
right after you get it lined up. We’re going to do both of those, so open it
up and if you did the bottom to the top, now we’re going to do the left to the right. Again, it will make a cross on the paper to
look just like that. Now from here, we’re going to make what’s
called a preliminary base or a square base. This is used in a lot of origami folds. Go ahead and pinch your fingers, right where
I have them, right at the top of these triangles just like this and you can sort of see if
you bring your fingers up together all of the corners of the paper. the original corners of the paper come up
and touch each other. We’re going to use that and then squash it
down flat. This is the preliminary or the square base,
and it again, uses all the folds we already have. We haven’t made any new ones. We’re just collapsing it in a new way. So the important thing here though, is to
realize what has these edges, these flaps right here, we want to make sure that they
are towards you when you’re folding, so they should be pointed down. Go ahead and find one flap on the side. What we’re going to do is a squash fold. We’re going to push down on the top of this,
and when that happens, you can see that this line right here, we want to get that to line
up right on the rest of the line. So not off to the side this way or off to
the side that way, but directly on top. You might have to put your finger up there
a little bit, just to make sure that you get it all the way flattened out. Line it up nice and flatten it down and that’s
the squash fold. We’re going to do that on each of these panels. There are four panels and you can rotate them
around, so that you can get each one of these, squashed down directly into that middle line. You might have to fold a few things out of
the way, in order to get to the last couple. They can be a little tricky to find sometimes. I’m going to fold that one over just like,
so all four panels are now squashed, and make sure that you have them all, with an equal
number on each side. So you might have it right now where there
are three on one side versus one. Just get it so there are two and two just
like that and that is the base that we’re going to use. Next we’re going to take one flap and fold
it over, so that you have all color showing, just color. We’re going to do what’s called a kite fold. We’re going to take both of these bottom corners
right here, these edges and fold them into the middle line just like this, and again,
be as precise as you can and make sure that everything lines up there just like that. And we’re going to do this on all four of
the panels as well, so go ahead and fold two flaps over this time and that’ll get you another
of these shapes that are all colored, and then do the exact same folds. As you work your way around, the whole model
will start to thin down into the new shape. So after we’ve folded both of these two flaps
over on all four of the panels, the next step is we’re going to take this top triangle,
we’re going to fold it down, as far as it’ll go and line it up right at the top edge, of
where the color starts just like that. We’re going to do that on all four flaps,
so go ahead and fold it over. Find that next little white triangle and work
your way all around, finding the panels where it’s open, and then fold that flap all the
way down. So this is what the model should look like
all the way around. So next step after we’ve folded all these
down all the way around, we’re going to fold one flap over, to where you get this shape
where it’s all colored. We’re going to make a little kite fold. We’re going to fold just a little triangle
down on each side. This is going to happen eight times, and it’s
going to go down to this corner right here, and up to the top. So go ahead and flip it over, and again, make
sure that you don’t do it, where you’ve got this flap folded down, don’t fold it like
that, but make sure you have it where you’ve folded a flap over and it’s all just color. Like I said, this is going to happen eight
times all the way around the model. So go ahead and open it up to where you find
it just like that. And after this you should be able to open
it up just a little bit. If you look at it from the top down, this
edge right here, just go ahead, get it where it’s nice and even all the spokes are even
like that. And then find the little stem of the strawberry
and sort of pull it out, so that it’s no longer tucked under. It sort of opens up, to give you a nice top
there for the strawberry just like that. And if you’d like, you can also put air into
it right here in the front and then that’ll open up the bottom just a little bit. So I’ll show you, it’ll just sort of pop up
right there in the back just a little bit like that. It gives it a little bit more shape, a little
bit more volume for the origami strawberry.
