How to apply Thistle SprayFinish – Applying The Plaster | British Gypsum

Applying Thistle SprayFinish is fast
and easy. Firstly fix the tapes and beads as necessary. Spray the plaster to a thickness of 2mm, spraying the first 1mm layer in a horizontal
direction and the second 1mm layer in a vertical direction. This cross-hatching technique encourages an even application of plaster. 5 to 10 minutes after you’ve applied the plaster to the entire area, flatten using a wide
spatula, trying not to remove any material. At this stage the surface may
contain trapped air bubbles or blisters, it’s best to leave them at this stage as
they will come out more easily later. This is one of the key differences
between spray and hand application. Work in different directions as shown. After about 35 to 40 minutes since first being sprayed, you can complete your first
trowel to remove any air bubbles, hollows or tool marks. At about 65 to 70 minutes, or when the
surface has taken on a matt or dull finish, you should start your second
trowel. At about 95 to 110 minutes, cross trowel to finish the surface. Use water sparingly, if at all, in the later stages. The unique spraying method makes
Thistle SprayFinish ideal for difficult to reach areas and ceilings. Application is more efficient with two or more people – one spraying while the other
follows with a spatula. You can even use the spatula around windows. For areas that are more intricate simply
use the trowel as you would normally. Use the spatula on an extended handle
for reaching high areas, or use plasterers stilts. Once sprayed Thistle SprayFinish allows several plasterers to achieve the perfect Thistle finish in
minimal time. For larger jobs requiring a scissor lift, SprayFinish makes an
excellent solution. As you become more familiar with the method you may find
that you can achieve a smooth finish with the spatula alone.
