Giving Back With Heart (and Crafts)

“What’s your favorite color?” At a hospital for kids, the thing you want
more than anything… “Being in the hospital is really hard.” …is to just be a kid. What helps most: “Are you going to put those stickers on it?” an escape. “It just gives the patients a little bit of,
uh, like a break.” Emily Kesselring is an 11th grade student
at Denver Online High School. A school for students with non-traditional
life schedules. And for Emily… “So, I was a Scoliosis patient…” …tradition, was never a choice. “…and then I was operated on when I was
in 8th grade, and I stayed here for a week. Um, and then I’ve been coming here ever
since then just for, like, checkups and everything, and I have migraines and, um, neurology problems
and everything like that.” (Kid rinses off paintbrush in water) Those escapes – little art projects, gift
bags… “Like, it just felt like someone actually cared
about me enough to give me a gift. Just to make me feel a little bit better,
and make the hospital room feel a little bit more homey.” On this day, she returns in good health, to
return the favor… “We’re really busy.” …bringing along her Denver Online High School classmates from all over the city to this one place for this one thing. Mariah: “Makes me feel like I’m a part of
a community that wants to help each other and that if I was ever in a situation that
I needed help, there would be people here for me, too.” “Yeah, it’s like, this is great!” That’s what community is about. “Drawing a new picture…” So other patients, siblings and family members
might feel things are a bit more homey here, too. “It gives us normalcy back to be able to bring
him out of his room and the treatments.” “Just, like, calm down from like, from him
in the hospital.” “Let him be around the other kids, and…
yeah. Yeah.” “And it just makes me feel good, because I
feel like everyone can give back a little bit. And I know that some people like to help,
I know, personally, I love to help people, and it makes me feel good when other people
like to help.” For DPS Features, I’m Ben McKee
