Discover University Features Guide: Robotics, Secret Society and More | Sims 4 Expansions

Whoo… well, Hi. I’ve been very busy making guides as there’s
a lot of little things in this pack but I wanted to come back to the channel. We went over the University system with roommates
and dorms in my last video, but we didn’t really look at any of the other things in
Discover University. I’m gonna give a rundown of what these other
gameplay features do and check out their pros and cons. #Robotics Skill
The Robotics skill is the first thing I want to look at, and it really deserves its own
video. It’s actually a pretty cool skill in the utility
bots and servos area but it has a few issues. Because it’s nice but not everything’s peachy,
OK. I’d say it’s one of the only things I found
annoying out of the side features. The ones that exist, anyway… unlike, traits. With robotics you can craft toys and make
a little money, but the bigger bots seem to be such a big parts sink that it’s really
not worth making this your main funding source. Now, the bigger bots are cool. Your Sim can turn them on with a remote and
they’ll hover about like worker bees and take care of what they’re supposed to take care
of. If something breaks down, fixer bot can handle
it for you, or the gardening bot can flutter about the garden tending things. They’re a great help, and I would say a good
reward for the time sink. See you need to craft computer chips and mechanisms
to craft things at the Robotics Workstation, and will need to do a lot of THIS on the computer
to order other parts. By the dozens and I’m not exaggerating here. It really shows how outdated some of our menus
are, with a need to let a player just punch in a number or have some way to add 10 at
a time. Because to order 99 parts, you really must
click plus 99 times. I really did burn through 99 parts in record
time working on this skill. Here’s a little tip by the way. If you have testingcheats on and shift click
the robotics workstation, you can actually get a load of parts into the active Sim’s
inventory. It’s a big help if you’re far into this and
don’t want to keep grinding out parts. It includes stuff like plumbing parts too! God I wish you could just order a box of parts
and pay some bulk rate to get them legitimately. You eventually get the ability to craft a
cybernetic enhancement, a robot arm that is connected to your spine. It’s very sweet looking. This gives you a +1 higher robotic skill while
wearing it and increases the speed you gain robotics skill by 25%, but it also speeds
up the crafting process by 20% for like.. everything physically crafted, as far as I’m
able to tell. That’s just awesome. As for making money, I made an attempt to
sell a bot I’d made because I heard you could make money with this skill and selling bots. I’d put $1500 and tons of parts into it, and
it sold for like $800. It sort of reminds me of Realm of Magic shipping
without potion prices set. Anyway… I lost way over a grand on this sell. I noticed that when upgraded the price got
a bit better, but the way parts are, it’s just too much of a hassle to keep upgrading
these guys if I don’t want to keep them. There are better ways to make money in The
Sims. Another thing about robotics is that it can
be a shockingly time consuming skill to level, as you’ll get zapped regularly. And this is going to lock you out for a few
hours unless you want to risk death. Because getting shocked twice will kill you. In case someone asked, I did check to see
if handiness might help with the random zaps but it’s not involved. So you might start a session, even focused,
because that doesn’t help prevent it, and get shocked and have to do something else
while dazed. And dazed is basically the worst moodlet in
the game, for everything. I guess it’s the price you pay, but why is
my Sim so careless. I got zapped over 20x while on the way to
the top. I know because after about the 4th time I
started counting (laughs). The Regular bots you can make all have a function
and will seek work while they’re on. They can be upgraded a whopping 10 times,
each. Getting a perk to either durability or the
duration of battery, or maybe how rapidly it charges. So if you really like one type, you can keep
sinking parts into it to make it better. And I’m all for that, that’s awesome, just
not the way it’s carried out making and buying one part at a time. At level 8 Servo unlocks, and it can be programmed
with a gender and you can choose the look. When activated they join your household and
take up one of the slots, while the regular bots do not. Servo can be upgraded with a few things and
you can program them with a number of the same traits regular Sims can have. They need fun and social but otherwise just
have charge and durability. Don’t let them run to 0 in durability or your
servo can essentially die if you take too long to repair it. They should be kept out of water in any form,
so don’t woohoo in the shower with them as apparently that’s a bad idea. Servo’s upgrades are kind of neat, and you
can even put in a nanny module that’ll make Servo take care of babies and toddlers. All these upgrades will need you to queue
up tons of the computer chips and mechanisms I talked about. I wish we could make several at once, I think
it’d alleviate that complaint. The other new skill in this pack is Research
and Debate, and I just love it. It’s a skill that teaches your Sim to learn
and has a strong synergy with the core education system. Overall my student’s experience would’ve been
very different had I started with a few levels in this, because it increases the rate you
do homework by a big chunk, and stacks with the study spot lot trait to further improve
that. As you level you’ll also speed up the rate
your Sim completes presentations and term papers. This skill has a side money maker in the ability
to contribute knowledge with the $12,000 Simoleon research archive machines. It has another side to it, in the ability
to convince other Sims to do things for you like… asking them to do homework. This has a 4 hour global cooldown whether
you succeed or not, so try to be in a good mood as it may improve your odds when you
ask. It’s just as useful for Foxbury students,
but it is used as part of the Debate Guild organization for Britechester University students. There are, I think, 3 organizations on each
campus that you can join to get a little more incentive to raise the new skills and attend
events. Head to the information kiosk on your Sim’s
campus and look at the event schedule. This will tell you when they’re meeting, and
it’s a simple matter of asking to join for all but one of them. Once you’re in, you have access to the organizations
panel – the same place they put clubs – and can now see the upcoming events much easier. You’ll have a list of tasks to complete here
as well. Foxbury has an honor society, prank guild,
and robotics society. Britechester has debate, art, and a school
spirit organization. This will let you unlock some new abilities,
as you can rank up in these a couple times. Being in one of these organizations isn’t
super time consuming. You’ll have at most one or two events per
week, but completing tasks for them and being friendly with other members will gradually
increase your rank and you do get some nice rewards for doing this. There is one more organization you can join
from either school, the Order of Enchantment, which is the Secret Society. I’ll get into those last so that anyone who
wants to dodge spoilers can do so. There are actually a total of five new careers
in this pack, though 2 of them require you to be enrolled in University and don’t offer
pay. They’re kind of like part-time jobs. They’re soccer team and E-sports. Getting high rank in these can actually lead
to an offer to quit and join a professional team immediately. Like, leave school, pack up! We’re done. Other than CAS stuff you might unlock, I think
this is the main goal. The other 3 are law, engineering, and education. Each of them are work from home style careers,
and you won’t find many rewards in these. Like, teacher’s special interactions on the
computer were not in particular very useful. However the Mechanical engineer unlocks a
special exo suit that pairs well with the robotics skill and computer engineers get
a helmet. There are a couple of new objects with unique
abilities in this pack, namely the new bikes which can be used as your main transportation
for long distances. They’re much better on the Britechester campus
as it has less stairs. The other new object that’s pretty cool is
the ICYA chest. Each one you put down can be named, and has
its own unique inventory. So you can label these by collectible type
or whatever you like, and organize your Sim’s home. Since there are multiple colors, you can easily
identify which chest is which. I’m sure at least some of you saw my video
on objects with new gameplay, and I’m sad to say I haven’t found any yet in this pack. I mean, there’s kegs but that’s mostly for
your Sim to have fun and goof around and not really adding anything to your play in a way
that’s meaningful in the way the celestial crystal crown might. On top of all these little things is the education
system in the pack. It’s the main attraction here, to be able
to go to school, live in a dorm or off campus. Overall I did like the systems just felt there
could’ve been improvements in presentation. The lack of info on grades in the careers
panel where your classes are scheduled is made a little better by using the phone’s
version of check for grades, as it does them all at once. All in all, going to college brings out the
best of Sims as a time management game as it can be fairly hectic with four classes
and especially if you attempt to participate in the university organizations, or, maybe
even worse, one of those and e-sports or soccer. This would keep you constantly on your toes,
but research and debate and a good routine with the study spot lot trait can fix that
up. Coming from Sims 3, I’m pretty bitter – and
I think we all should be – that it appears we’ve given up on new traits and aspirations
as a feature in every pack. It’s just like clothes and build items, they
should be expected. We got one new aspiration and it’s essentially
a walkthrough of the research skill and getting a diploma. Ok, so on to the Secret Society. I won’t talk about their lore, which is doable
with the new research machine once you’re in the group. You can learn a bit about them. You’ll find them meeting in the woods near
Pepper’s Pub on Wednesday and Friday nights after 10pm. These guys scatter if you show up, but they’ll
openly welcome you if you make a good offering. Making an offering to academic success can
be done at your University’s main statue, ya know, the one that the students are always
defacing? We know that rare crystals and metals work
but they also appear to like baked goods but they have to be excellent quality. Here’s the thing about that. I don’t see how you get the baked goods if
you live on campus because you’re not allowed to have a stove, so this option seems easiest
for Sims who either live off campus, have a family in town or are close friends with
someone with an oven. Remember that Sims will stop you from cooking
in their homes, so you have to come up with a way to bake for them in the first place..
and I think it means things like cakes that count as desserts, not just the baking skill
from Get to Work. Once you make an offering to them, they’ll
actually show up at night to pay you a visit and invite you to join. There’s a bunch of great things about being
in this group, in that you get really powerful moodlets from the sprites. These don’t just impact mood, oh no. They also give you a big boost to career performance
and this does include class. That’s the focused one, but the inspired also
boosts the chances of masterpiece quality works or excellent quality cooking. It’s really good stuff. So yes, you can rank up in the Secret Society
just as you would rank up in the debate guild. Just complete tasks and be friendly with other
members. I think the… I think that you need to show up at meetings
in order to benefit from being friendly, but there’s always new things to learn and I haven’t
gone that deep into it yet. I’ve been at it for several days now, trying
to make as many pages as I can about this pack. I may do some in-depth stuff about a couple
of the topics in this video but that’ll have to wait. I’ve probably still got about 10 pages to
make! It paid off, the site had a record-setting
day and so did the channel just recently. Thanks a lot for all your support people who
stay to the end, it’s really been a fun coverage even if it can be hectic. Thanks for watching and have a great week.

  1. Carl, here's some REALLY important tips when it comes to the Secret Society! 1. As of now, there's a glitch where the Sprites will still pop up after you graduate or quit the Secret Society. Be prepared to have to entertain the little buggers until the next patch! 2. The way to make baked goods without a stove is to upgrade the mini fridge until the food comes out excellent quality. Then, put a Scout cookie in your inventory, and use it as an offering for the statue!

  2. I was able to get some baked goods with the random food that gets delivered to my dorm, in this case flirty cookies. I used those as an offering and got accepted into the secret society.

  3. You can sleep off being dazzled. Sometimes it goes away instantly when you go to sleep. I love Servos, they look super cool. I've waited all this time to get Servos back. But I don't like that they have fun and social needs and are not waterproof.

  4. I'm kinda disappointed by this pack. Brightchester is always empty and dead, nothing funny happens at the dorm and all your gameplay is a routine.

  5. Hey Carl, for the ordering parts online, I'm almost positive that you can click inside the # box and manually type in how many you want to buy. It's not the same as being able to buy in bulk, but it's definitely better than breaking your fingers from clicking!

  6. Thanks for the great information Carl! I put a cupcake machine at the commons for baked goods to be offered. They accepted them and my sim was only on level 2 baking skill. I guess I just got lucky. Thanks again for all your help.

  7. I have been watching your videos for a while and visiting your site here and there. Thank you so much for all you do, your hard work and time!

  8. One question: Can I jump trough the families while attending university, and expect semester to not be moving on when I will be playing another family at another university? Hope you understand what I'm trying to do here 😉

  9. I used crumble that i made on the grill. You have a grill at the bar near the secret society meeting spot. That was really handy.

My sims has completed the chef aspiration and was a 10 level chef. Her cooking is excellent on the microwave. So i baked the dessert in the microwave. The only thing is that she wanted to eat it all the time so it was more practical to use the outdoor grills.

I stole the baking goods of my roommate as well.

And my sims lives in dorms.

  10. I'm not sure how I feel about this pack. I think the overall feeling I get is that they wanted to make a good university experience but they cannot redo the core functions of the game so things feel very…strange and limited in some cases.

  11. On your website and in you last video on this pac you say that it would be a good idea to enroll on a sunday so to skip weekend if you want a quicker term, but when I tried that my sim got monday off too, and so it was the same as if i'd enrolled monday except I hadd an extra day without any real goals (since my sim's goal was to, ehm, woohoo with a professor.. can't meet them if you haven't been to class yet)

  12. Hey Carl, I've been reading your guides since the sims 3 and recently discovered your videos. I love how informative they are. I was expecting a Sims 2 robotics station, but this is such a hassle. I agree that the design for ordering (and inventory too) needs so much improvement. Also, whenever I use the robotics table with a basketball hoop on the lot, my sims stop working and go shoot hoops. I can't figure out what causes this, but it's every single time! I had to put it in storage to level up robotics.

  13. This was really well made! If you want, here’s a little info about the sprites from the secret society, just from my experience: The sprites don’t actually demand excellent quality baked goods, they even take spoiled food, poor quality grilled food, common flowers and crystals.. I grilled some hot dogs and grinded my way to senior member in a couple in game days. Also, for some reason, the sprites keep bothering you after you leave Uni. That’s at least what’s happening to me.

  14. I have roommates in my house lot and they keep saying 'they can't live in this condition' and leave, is this a glitch or just gameplay?

  15. – If you enhance your Servo and accidentally/mandatorily cancelled the action, parts will be gone and you can't resume the enhancement.
    – If you make your Servo download enhancement, it'll download at least 70% then get stuck.
    – If you enhance Utili-Bots, the parts just vanish without enhancing them.

At least this happens in my game.

  16. In FF7 from 1997 you could push the down button and you'd get 99 of a thing you were buying. I think we can figure out a way of making that a thing in a 2019 game as well.

  17. I’ve maxed out baking and cooking, and I have tried 5 times giving excellent quality baked goods and still can’t get into secret society.

  18. As far as giving baked good, occasionally the commons food choices one will be apple pie & i used that as an offering and it worked

  19. Why can't my sim move household into another lot on campus? When I try it says "only for Sims enrolled in university" which she is – I just want to move.

  20. For me, I don’t think I’ll ever use the robots. It feels out of place in the pack, and I kind of wish they focused on anything else. Anything.

  21. hi carl, im not sure if youve talked it anywhere before but i had this storyline planned where i'd have 2 sisters attend 2 unis and live in the unis' respective dorms but because of this i found out u cant rly play switching between households like that because the term days pass whether youre there or not… at least thats that i assumed because i started one term with sim1 and then moved to sim2 on another campus and played with her for 3 days, then came back to sim1 who hasnt even been to one class this semester. but after the first classes she took she got her report card with her grades and question whether she'd like to repply for the next term… meaning that her term passed by without me even playing with her (aging is off for active households). idk if this was a glitch or its actually supposed to be like that – term days passing like the calendar holidays???? its very annoying, it ruined all my plans

  22. if anyone knows how to get rid of the sprite's could you let me know. I quit the secret society to get rid of them but that didn't work. I've even graduated and they still come around.

  23. I’ve been reading your online guides, thanks for the effort you put into them! Love that you have a YouTube channel too. 👍🏻👍🏻

  24. You sound so tired in this one, Carl … did you get zapped a few times with your Sim?! 😛 I think it's really funny that the robotics station causes such frequent electrical damage – I've been playing with it this weekend as well but did not get zapped quite that many times (yet) but my Sim hasn't gotten far enough along yet to make that many of the utili-bots or the servo. You're far more dedicated to it than I am. I've been playing around with the roommate function to see just how many roommates you can actually add to a household. I was wondering if you could have 8 live-in household members and also roommates in addition to that since they don't count as household members … but there seems to be a glitch in that the roommates keep getting removed from my household as roommates (I was up to 6 total) when I kicked out a couple of them – as in all of them got booted. So I had to start over with the experiment and got frustrated. I would love to have a super sci-fi underground bunker full of science and engineering sims – sort of like a live-in FutureSims Lab – but I can't seem to get the roommate function to work beyond just a few sims despite being able to keep adding more and more roommates! It's glitchy. Maybe you will test it out too and create a 'slum lord' who keeps bringing in a lot of housemates just to rack up money from the rent, haha.

  25. Can you put robotic parts into the get to work chillbox thing that acts as a vending machine or using a cloning machine?

  26. There we go! We can actually put effort on how do things now. Though i'm not happy how they plus 15 dollars for this pack for some fricking reason…..

  27. Is Discover University good at all? Like does anyone recommend it? I can tell it isn’t as good as Sims 3s university expansion but still would like to know

  28. I wanna get rid of the sprites but I don’t know how. I already quit the secret society but they just won’t go away. Did you get to the pint of figuring that out already? It would help my poor tense sim 😅 thanks for such informative videos!!

  29. Make room for our robot overlords.Servo gets full energy from getting zapped by the workbench, so just get that robot recursion running and you’re good to go

  30. i'm finding everyones reviews kinda funny. people have been complaining about expansions and game packs being too easy to achieve and rather superficial , but now everyone is complaining how much more demanding uni is on game play. poor developers can't win.

  31. Some people mentioned that the get to school early trigger will refill all your Sims needs at once is a glitch in the game. I don’t think it is a glitch. I think it is meant to be and a good tip for those who their Sims to get A+. Let the trigger activity happen automatically.

  32. You do get about 4 parts every time you tinker at the station, though, which means buying is not the only way to get them (although, of course, the much faster one).

  33. I’ve been watching people play this pack as I don’t have it yet and it seems that roommates only dorms often bring back “goods from home” and often times it is baked goods. So sims can steal these and give them as an offering since they don’t have a stove or their own.

  34. I dont like servo it's just another sim that looks like a robot the butlers better. I broke one with mods there sim form came out lol

  35. About the baked goods, you CAN put down a cupcake factory machine in the dorms. (Weird I know) Unfortunately they do take up a lot of space so you might have to scale it down a bit in order to get it to fit. Also has anyone else run into the Computer Glasses Glitch? Basically if you wear them for a while, they disappear from your inventory making it literally impossible to ever get them off again… EVER. No matter the outfit, no matter the age (teen and up) Once this happens, you can consider those glasses a permanent part of your sim's face. It really sucks! I hope they fix this soon.

  36. While living on campus, I visited the park in San Myshuno. There's a kitchen in the building there where you can make baked goods to take back to the statue in Britechester to make the sacrifice for the secret society.

  37. How does one activate servo? I constructed the bot but the only options that come up when I click on it are dismantle and sell…

  38. carl, this has nothing to do with anything (though great video, as always) but are you from west virginia? your accent pings west virginia to me but sometimes you also sound like you’re from my area in south jersey 😂 i’ve just gotta know. sometimes you sound like my cousins and sometimes like a lost mcelroy brother.

  39. isn't there a kiosk that you can get baked goods from dunno if this works or not i got it to work by giving a crystal i think

  40. It's still sad to me aspirations went from a kinda lifetime wish to achieve to just a tutorial guide on new pack content. So many are no brainers to add. For DU, 3 aspirations for maxing each new career. Popularity one for doing all 6 (or 3 so you could stay uni specific you wantef) of the organizations. A knowledge one for mastering robotics. Heck coulda also added a one as a way to get the overachiever trait where the sim has to try get As from grade school through uni and sustain a part time job. That's 6 just looking at the features they advertised the most 🤦🏻‍♀️

  41. Been following you for years, especially during the Sims 3 era I was always on your page learning how to make my gameplay better. I really just want to thank you for continually and consistently creating such in-depth, easy to understand guides. You are such an asset to the Sims Community. Much love.

  42. My servo got abducted by aliens and ended up pregnant with an alien baby and then I got sidetracked from by robot detective playthough giving my robot a big family tree that includes an alien, humans, a mermaid and a spellcaster.

  43. carl have you ever heard of justin mcelroy? he's a podcaster and y'all speak so similarly it's insane! are you from appalaicha?

  44. I'm not sure if the baked goods for the secret society have to be excellent. I used 3 sims, and they each took a whole cake from their dorm. Out of the 3, one was accepted into the secret society, unfortunately i didn't check the quality of the cake. so either it was excellent or lower than excellent just has a random chane

  45. At 11:38 it shows a sim using a hologram map I've never seen before… is that a mod or a part of the game I've somehow missed entirely??

  46. Regarding Servos, does anyone else have a problem where you can't activate them once you're done building them? Whenever I go to activate them all it says is dismantle or sell deactivated servo. It's very annoying especially when you end up wasting all your parts, thank you Carl for showing the cheat for more parts!

  47. I need help. I have completed all 12 subjects and can't take anymore.. BUT my sim doesn't seem to graduate. I've never gotten a diploma, nor a graduation hat, and the time schedule for school still is on my work slot even though I finished. I also have the uni aspiration, but on there there is a "complete a degree"-goal and it isn't complete. I don't get it, my sim is finished but not finished at the same time 😫

  48. Hi there! Do you think there’s a way to add specific characters to a dorm without adsing them into the household? By removing them I have to move them out…

  49. I havent gotten exited for a sims 4 pack since cats and dogs and thats only because i was expecting it to be like sims 3 pets. I honestly dont see the appeal of a college expansion pack.

  50. Honestly getting pretty desperate over here trying to troubleshoot this expansion, and have tried EA's web based tech support (currently waiting for a call) but I'm going to point out this bug just in case anyone can help or is experiencing this too.

I have a 64bit pc, don't have legacy, and ever since I bought Discover University on Friday, the game freezes after the title screen.

I've tried everything I can think of – mods are empty, restarted my laptop, closed everything with the task manager and relaunched, cleared my caches, reinstalled origin using the link EA sent me, used a ccleaner on everything they recommended and still.. nothing.

Without legacy or the need for it, I have no idea why this is such a big problem.

  51. Is there a way to invite family members to the graduation event? It was such a let down that they just stood around in front of a building….no family etc. And once she moved back home… one even acknowledged that she had come back from school.

  52. I found I leveled Robotics faster by doing the Physics degree than I ever did using the Robotics Workbench. I also accidentally found a legitimate, if exploitative, means of amassing larger amounts of components:
When the Bot Savants host their weekly Utilibot Contest, you can just take their bots. Select > Put In Inventory. Those robots can be disassembled on the workbench for a collection of upgrade parts, computer chips, and mechanisms which can then be put to use building the Exomech suit/helmet or a Servo.

  53. Hey, I might be wrong, but I think the Confident mood lessens the chance of electrocution while making robotics
Here's why I think it is:

I got electrocuted 5 times in a row, It pissed me off, and I summoned one of my Familiars from the Magic DLC to try to "cheat death". This gave me a constant Confident buff and not once my sim electrocuted herself. When I summoned it, I was Rank 4 on Robotics, so I can't even say that my sim got good at it.

Again, i might just got lucky. It doesn't really makes sense, why would Confident result in not frying yourself, but hey… More food for thought.

  54. Congratulations you’re videos are great 👍🏼 I enjoyed this one,I haven’t had the chance to buy this pack yet,but I will,it looks worth it!😃👍🏼

  55. If you are at level 4 of the Scientist Career and have the Chemistry Lab and experiment at home the game almost exclusively gives you Robot Parts for making the robots and at 3x speed I made about 40 in 2 in game hours
