Game designers make use of comparisons to motivate players. However, the focus on top players can be intimidating for others who are less skilled. Low-achievers may, then, not engage in the game or drop out. We then designed two social comparison feedbacks that made comparison targets look closer. Both strategies seemed to work and led gamers to score more. However, there are important observations regarding experience level and social comparison orientation. Come see what we learned about making upward comparisons seem less intimidating.
