User experience is all about making
people’s lives better by making devices or systems easier to use or faster to
understand, and hopefully even delighting us bringing us joy.
So, last year we collected a few examples that brought a lot of us, at NN/g, joy; and
I’m going to share a couple of those with you. One of them was this simple
piece of card stock, by United Airlines. It’s actually was behind the
seat folded in with their other promotional materials.
It’s actually a portable device stand. I’m going to fold this up while I tell you
about it. There are instructions here. United has switched to doing a lot of
personal device entertainment. It’s cheaper for the airline to do.
From the flyer’s experience, that means that users have to carry their own devices,
and watch TV and movies on long flights flights on their own tablets and phones.
What United did was they realized if everybody is carrying these things
around to entertain themselves, they wanted to offer a way to allow
people to comfortably watch things. So, they have this little foldable piece of paper,
you stick your phone in there, and then you sit back and you watch your content.
I love it enough that I brought this, and I’ve been saving this for months. Silly
things like that can really delight people. That’s what we’re all about
as user experience specialists. Another thing that we all really
liked were emoji. Emoji just bring us joy because we get to send our
loved ones and friends and colleagues texts that express more of
what we’re really feeling. This year, we’d like to invite all of you to
share with us: what brings you delight? What user experience improvements
have made a difference in your lives? Be they small things or big things. Share with us by tweeting with the hashtag: #GiveUXThanks
