Country artist Clay Walker shares inspiring story about living with MS

>>Fiona: MULTI PLATINUM COUNTRY SELLING CLAY WALKER HAS HAD A CAREER SPANNING 20 YEARS. 20 YEARS AGO HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. CLAY SHARES AN UPDATE ON HIS LIFE, MUSIC, AND FAMILY.>>GOOD MORNING, FIONA. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME ON TODAY. IT’S GOOD TO BE IN SAN ANTONIO.>>Fiona: SPEAKING OF FAMILY, CONGRATULATIONS. YOU AND YOUR WIFE JESSICA JUST WELCOMED A FOURTH BABY BOY NAMED EZRA.>>EZRA STEVEN. TWO WEEKS AGO. HE’S PRECIOUS. HE WOKE ME UP AT 3:00 A.M. THIS MORNING. I FEEL LIKE I ALREADY HAVE HALF A DAY’S WORK DONE.>>Fiona: YOU PROBABLY NEED SOME EXTRA SLEEP AT TH POINT, WHENEVER YOU GET A CHANCE.>>I’M OKAY WITH IT. FAMILY IS EVERYTHING. OF COURSE YOU KNOW THAT AND THAT’S WHY I TRY TO STAY HEALTHY. IT’S WHY I D EVERYTHING I CAN TO KEEP MYSELF UP RIGHT, STAYING ON TOUR, STAYING HEALTHY, AND FIGHTING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, OBVIOUSLY.>>Fiona: BACK WHEN YOU GOT THAT DIAGNOSIS, DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD HAVE THE SUCCESS YOU WOULD HAVE AND THE LIFE YOU HAVE TODAY?>>NO, FIONA. WHEN I WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED, I WAS VERY BROKEN. I MEAN, I WAS, YOU KNOW, IN MY EARLY 20s. I FELT LIKE, YOU KNOW, IT WAS THE END OF THE WORLD. BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEN AND TODAY IS THAT I HAVE, YOU KNOW, A LOT MORE EDUCATION AND I HAVE LEARNED MORE ABOUT MS THAN I EVER PLANNED ON LEARNING. I CAN TELL YOU THIS. I’M VERY HEALTHY AND I HAVE NOT HAD A RELAPSE IN 19 STRAIGHT YEARS. YOU KNOW, IT’S SIGNIFICANT. I’M WHAT YOU WOULD CALL A MIRACLE. I’M VERY HAPPY. I LIVE A FULFILLED LIFE. I HAVE A GREAT CAREER STILL. I HAVE A GREAT FAMILY. WE’LL BE DOING 100-CITY TOUR COMING UP STARTING IN JANUARY. AND, YOU KNOW, THAT’S BEEN BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN RELAPSE FREE AND I HAVE BEEN DOING GREAT. BUT THE EDUCATION, THAT PROCESS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ANYBODY LIVING WITH MS. YOUR CAREGIVERS — THIS IS NATIONAL CAREGIVER MONTH. MY WIFE, JESSICA, IS AT HOME WITH OUR CHILD, OBVIOUSLY. AND SHE’S BEEN A SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT AND HELP FOR ME. AND, YOU KNOW, SHE’S MY ROCK. BUT THE EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT. YOU NEED TO FIND A NEUROLOGIST IF YOU HAVE MS. A GREAT MS SPECIALIST. MY RELATIONSHIPS AND MY PARTNERSHIP WITH TEVA AND MY NEUROLOGIST HAVE TAUGHT ME SO MUCH. I WOULDN’T BE HERE TODAY IF NOT FOR THAT. WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED I WAS TOLD I WOULD BE IN A WHEELCHAIR IN FOUR YEARS AND DEAD IN EIGHT. YOU CAN SEE THAT’S NOT THE CASE. I’M HERE. 19 YEARS RELAPSE FREE. I PLAN ON BEING HERE A LOT LONGER.>>Fiona: YOUR STORY IS INCREDIBLY INSPIRING AND GIVES A LOT OF HOPE TO FOLKS ALSO BATTLING MS. THIS HAS BEEN SUCH A TREAT FOR ME TO TALK TO YOU. HAS THERE EVER BEEN A MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER WHEN YOU WERE STAR STRUCK?>>PROBABLY THE ONLY TIME THAT I EVER FELT THAT WAS WHEN I MET MERLE HAGGARD. A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE YOUNGER DON’T KNOW WHO HE IS. BUT PEOPLE WHO ARE FANS OF REAL DEEP COUNTRY MUSIC FANS KNOW EXACTLY WHO HE IS. THAT DID IT FOR ME. I THINK GEORGE STRAIT WAS A B FAN OF HAGGARD’S AS WELL. AND I THINK THAT REFLECTS IN HIS MUSIC AND MY MUSIC AS WELL. YOUR HUSBAND WROTE ONE OF THE SONGS ON MY NEW ALBUM COMING OUT NEXT YEAR. SO I’M DOUBLE HAPPY TO BE DOING THIS INTERVIEW WITH YOU.>>Fiona: I’M SO THRILLED TO HEAR THAT. YES, NAPKIN FOR THE NUMBER IS THE SONG AND WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR THAT ALBUM TO COME OUT. ♪ NAPKIN FOR THE NUMBER ♪ ♪ NUMBER FOR T CALL GIRL ♪ ♪ WHAT WAS I MISSING ON IF YOU KEPT WALKING ON ♪>>I HAD TO DO IT. THAT IS HOW YOU AND YOUR WIFE MET.>>THAT IS EXACTLY HOW WE MET. SHE WASN’T TOO KEEN ON DATING A SINGER. BUT THANK GOODNESS SHE SAID YES.>>Fiona: A LOT OF SIMILARITIES. OH, CLAY. IT HAS BEEN SUCH A JOY TO TALK TO YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR STORY AND FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE TO HELP FIGHT MS.>>THANK YOU. AND I HOPE BEING ABLE TO SHARE MY STORY TODAY WILL ENCOURAGE
