Bachelor of Craft and Design – Glass | Sheridan

My name’s Koen Vanderstukken, and I’m the studio head of the Glass Department and I teach mainly concept development
and glass technology in a first year class. It’s a very unique material. It’s a material that just keeps showing new faces every time you approach it – that’s what
intrigues me most about glass, that there’s still a lot to
discover. We try to pay attention to all these different
aspects of glass. You have the transparency, you have the colour, you
have the soft curves, and the aesthetic parts of glass that are attractive to most people, and
a technique that is very intriguing for a lot of our students as well. Glass blowing, something
you can do with glass, you wouldn’t be able to do it with any other material. One of the most challenging parts is, that it comes with its very unique technical
qualities, and so here at Sheridan we try to show all those different techniques and all those different approaches that you can take through glass – so from hot work, to cold work, to electroplating, to
everything you can do with glass. Sheridan’s Craft and Design project is very unique and very advanced. I’ve been to many places in the world and I like the spirit here, I like the
atmosphere that there is amongst faculty and students. It’s very important that you
have that direct connection with the students and that you get
to know them – not just as a student but also as a person and so it will allow you to enter
their creative world and see what their needs are and and how we can help them and move them forward on their path. You try to be here also after you’ve
done your classes and most of our faculty are very engaged and
stay way beyond the time that they’re actually paid for. It’s the best.
